CT State Northwestern Supports Banned Books Week with the Film The Librarians

CT State Northwestern Library Services will present the film The Librarians on Tuesday, October 6, 8 p.m. in the Founders Hall auditorium, 4 Park Place, Winsted. The event is free and open to the public.

Banned Books Week 2026 runs from October 4 through 10 and is an annual event that highlights the value of free and open access to information. In 2025, The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 4,235 unique titles challenged and documented 5,668 (66 percent) banned from libraries; the highest rate of challenges, and the highest number of titles censored, in one year.

The 2025, Emmy award winning documentary, The Librarians, directed by Kim A. Snyder, follows librarians in Texas, Florida, and other states as they worked to stop the ban of books and secure democracy and first amendment rights in the United States. According to the film’s website thelibrariansfilm.com, Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.
