Connecticut State Community College (CT State) is strengthening manufacturing education opportunities across Connecticut through expanded facilities, new programs, workforce partnerships, and career pathways designed to meet the evolving needs of the state's manufacturing sector.

Today, CT State enrolls approximately 1,742 students annually in manufacturing-related programs and has 13 training locations statewide, making it Connecticut's leading provider of entry- and mid-level manufacturing education and training.

"Manufacturing Month provides an opportunity to recognize the critical role manufacturing plays in Connecticut's economy and celebrate the students, faculty, employers, and industry partners helping build the state's future workforce," said CT State's Interim President Christina Royal, Ph.D. "CT State remains committed to providing accessible pathways into manufacturing careers while helping Connecticut employers develop the skilled workforce needed for continued growth and innovation."

Among CT State's newest manufacturing offerings is an optics fabrication and metrology certificate, which launched this fall. Offered at CT State Norwalk, the program equips students with hands-on skills in optics fabrication, metrology, blueprint reading, and quality assurance while preparing them for careers supporting the aerospace, defense, medical device, and telecommunications industries. The program was developed in collaboration with Connecticut optics industry leaders to align with workforce needs in one of the state's most specialized manufacturing sectors.

Recent new facilities and expansion have included a new Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center at CT State Tunxis in Farmington, opened in March 2025. Since launching its first full-time advanced manufacturing cohort later that year, the campus has expanded to operate multiple cohorts while increasing evening course offerings. The daytime program has reached capacity and established a waitlist, reflecting continued demand for manufacturing education in the region.

Additional projects in the past two years have included the renovation and expansion of CT State Housatonic's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in Bridgeport, the opening of a new Manufacturing Center at CT State Capital in Hartford, upgrades to manufacturing training facilities and new plastic injection molding equipment at CT State Middlesex, the launch of an evening precision manufacturing certificate program at CT State Manchester, and grant-supported enhancements at CT State Asnuntuck through the national Metallica Scholars Initiative, which funded scholarships, classroom software, personal protective equipment, OSHA certification, and other workforce readiness resources for students.

CT State is also strengthening Connecticut's future manufacturing workforce through programs that engage students before they graduate from high school. Over the past two years, CT State Quinebaug Valley and Three Rivers nearly doubled participation in the Youth Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative (YMPI). The career-connected partnership program introduces students to advanced manufacturing while helping prepare them for high-demand careers.

Partnerships with manufacturers and industry leaders help ensure CT State programs remain aligned with workforce needs. Students engage directly with employers through internships, facility tours, guest speakers, mock interviews, and apprenticeships that provide valuable industry experience while helping employers connect with future talent.

Those investments are resulting in strong outcomes for students and employers. More than 90 percent of graduates from many CT State manufacturing programs secure employment in the sector after program completion.

Niaunna Xayavong of New Britain is already putting her CT State Tunxis manufacturing education to work every day. A second-semester machining student, Xayavong applies classroom lessons in blueprint reading, measurement, quality control, and machining directly to her role as an assembler at IDEX Health & Science in Bristol, where she has taken on machine work as her skills have grown.

Most of the concepts she learns in class are immediately applicable at work. "A year ago, I would have been lost working on this equipment," said Xayavong. "I have the knowledge and confidence to do so much more in my job. Manufacturing isn't just about machines. It's such an important part of our world, and there are so many career paths," she added. After attaining her associate degree at Tunxis, she plans to pursue a bachelor's degree and is interested in manufacturing engineering.

Manufacturing education at CT State ranges from short-term certificate programs that can be completed in as little as six weeks to associate degree pathways that support long-term career growth. Many programs offer stackable credentials, and students can transfer through the Connecticut College of Technology pathway to continue their education in engineering and technology-related bachelor's degree programs. As Connecticut's most affordable higher education option, CT State also helps reduce financial barriers to manufacturing careers, with many students qualifying for free tuition and financial aid.
