Governor Ned Lamont has proclaimed April as Community College Month in Connecticut, recognizing the role of Connecticut State Community College (CT State) in expanding affordable higher education and career training for nearly 65,000 students each year across its 12 campuses.

“A strong economy starts with a strong education system, and that’s exactly what we’ve been focused on successfully building here in Connecticut,” said Governor Ned Lamont. “Connecticut State Community College continues to make meaningful strides by expanding career-focused programs, strengthening connections with local employers, and creating more flexible, affordable options for students. That progress is helping position Connecticut to have one of the most skilled and competitive workforces in the country, while opening doors to good-paying, long-term careers.”

Christina Royal, Ed.D., interim president of CT State Community College, said the proclamation highlights the college’s role in helping students access higher education while meeting the state’s workforce needs.

“At a time when employers urgently need skilled workers and families are weighing the cost of higher education more carefully than ever, community colleges play a critical role,” Royal said. “With the support of our talented faculty and staff, CT State meets students where they are academically, geographically, and financially by providing affordable, flexible pathways that prepare them for careers, further education, and long-term success in Connecticut.”

CT State offers more than 300 degree and certificate programs, including short-term, industry-aligned credentials in high-demand fields such as health care, manufacturing, and information technology. Through early college partnerships with more than 180 Connecticut high schools, thousands of students can earn college credit each year while still in high school.

The proclamation aligns with the national observance of Community College Month, which highlights the role of community colleges in advancing economic mobility, workforce development, and lifelong learning.

“Community College Month is an important opportunity to recognize the profound impact our institutions have on students, families, and communities across Connecticut,” said O. John Maduko, M.D., interim chancellor of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU). “Connecticut State Community College is committed to expanding access, advancing equity, and preparing students for meaningful careers in a rapidly changing economy. Our students are the future of this state, and through their success, we continue to strengthen Connecticut’s workforce and drive economic growth in every community we serve. I thank Governor Ned Lamont for recognizing the essential role our community college plays in opening doors to opportunity and empowering Connecticut’s students to achieve their goals.”

In addition to workforce training, CT State provides seamless transfer pathways that allow students to complete associate degrees and continue their education at Connecticut’s public and private four-year universities at a significantly lower overall cost. Nearly all students are Connecticut residents, and the vast majority remain in the state after graduation, contributing directly to their communities and the statewide economy.

Throughout April, CT State will host open houses and events across its campuses to highlight academic programs, free tuition eligibility, transfer opportunities and student support services. Financial aid workshops will be offered on separate dates for help with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For a list of events this spring, visitcalendar.ctstate.edu.
